Remain At The Gate

Writer's picture: The King's TableThe King's Table

Esther 6 - Did you notice how many times it mentions Mordecai “sitting at the King’s gate”??? It is referenced 10 times in the book of Esther and twice in Chapter 6. He wasn’t just hanging out, he had an official high civic position there. Gates in the Bible were typically places of public gathering and meeting; public deliberation and administration of justice; for kings and rulers to display their majesty; public markets. And, those that were positioned there were regarded as people of high honor and great importance.

While sitting at the king’s gate, God revealed the strategy of the enemy to Mordecai (Esther 2) and He would use him as an instrument in the deliverance of His people. It was at the king’s gate that God would protect, honor and reward Mordecai.

In John 10:9, Jesus says “I am the Gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.” Sitting “at the gate” is a picture of abiding in the presence of Jesus. Are you abiding at the Gate? Trusting, praying, listening, learning, worshipping, and standing firm in your faith like Mordecai.

Did you notice that Mordecai, after being bestowed such a high honor, went right back to “sitting at the gate” (v. 12)? Humble, faithful, obedient to the position where God had placed him. No matter the world honor, no matter the enemy’s tactics, remain “at the Gate” - at the feet of Jesus - and all will be well!!!
