He Hung On The Cross For You

Writer's picture: The King's TableThe King's Table

Amos 8 - The surrounding nations and Israel had committed terrible sins against God – social injustices, political and judicial corruption, material complacency, pride, arrogance, religious hypocrisy. Sounds like today’s world, huh??? God sees ALL of your sins and mine, and even your motives behind all of it. He sees our hearts. We are no better than the people of Amos’ day. And we deserve harsh judgment and severe discipline like is spoken of in Amos 8. But 790 year later, on a wooden cross, God’s only Son, Jesus Christ would die for the sins of everyone on earth. The event was long foretold in this prophecy in Amos 8:9-10. In verse 9, the sun is going down at noon, and mourning for an only son is described in verse 10. Sound familiar??

“From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?’” Matthew 27:45-46

As the Light of the world was put to death for YOU and ME – when all of the sins of the world were placed on him – darkness covered the land. We can’t even begin to imagine what Jesus went through for us during that period of darkness. For three days, spiritual darkness and utter hopelessness remained. But ON THE THIRD DAY Jesus burst forth from the darkness, defeating sin and death and the forces of evil once and for all. Thank you Jesus!
